A free Turnitin alternative for checking your own draft

As a student, you can't run Turnitin's AI check on your own work. You can check your draft here first, sentence by sentence, for free and without an account.

Why students look for a Turnitin alternative

Most people searching for a Turnitin alternative are students who want one thing: to see how a draft reads before a teacher runs it through Turnitin. The tool above is our free AI detector. Paste 40 to 200 words and it marks every sentence as reading human or AI, with an overall % human score. But it isn't Turnitin, it doesn't use Turnitin's model, and it can't tell you the score your teacher will see.

You can't simply buy Turnitin either. The company doesn't sell individual licenses and sells its checks only to schools, universities and organizations. Its credit-based service for individuals, iThenticate, checks similarity only: individual credits don't include AI writing detection.

How to use Turnitin's AI checker as a student

In most cases you can't, even at a school that pays for Turnitin. Its own FAQ says only instructors and administrators can see the AI writing indicator, and the report isn't shown to students. A few details are still worth knowing:

  • Your instructor can share it. Turnitin lets instructors download the AI writing report as a PDF and pass it on. If your work is ever questioned, ask to see it.
  • The Similarity Report is a different check. If your class lets you open your similarity score, it shows text that matches other sources. Turnitin keeps that score and the AI percentage completely separate.
  • The AI check may not be on at all. It runs only if your school licenses Turnitin's AI writing feature and has it switched on, and several universities have turned it off. Our guide to what AI detectors colleges use lists who did and why.

How to pre-check a draft before you submit it

What you can do on your own is check the draft with a detector you're allowed to run. These steps make the result more useful:

  1. Check the version you'll hand in. Late edits change the result, so run the check after your final pass.
  2. Paste prose only. Turnitin scores long-form prose of at least 300 words and skips bullet points, tables and annotated bibliographies. Leave those out here too, along with the title page and reference list.
  3. Work in sections. One check takes up to 200 words, so split a longer paper at paragraph breaks and keep each piece above 40 words.
  4. Read the red sentences, not only the score. They show which lines read like AI to this detector. Rewrite those in your own words, then check again.
  5. Keep your drafts. Version history in Google Docs or Word shows how you wrote something far better than any score.

For long essays, quotes and citations, the AI detector for essays page goes into more detail.

Which AI detector is closest to Turnitin?

No outside tool can honestly claim to be. An AI detector can look similar to Turnitin, with a percentage and highlighted sentences, and still run on a different model underneath. Turnitin describes its own as a proprietary, transformer-based model trained on its own collection of academic writing. Our detector uses a different model, and so does every other AI checker you can sign up for. We haven't tested how our scores line up with Turnitin's, so we don't claim they do.

The two tools also report results in different ways:

Turnitin AI writing reportLumenWrite AI detector
Who can run itInstructors and admins at schools that license itAnyone: 5 checks a day, no account
What the number meansThe share of qualifying prose its model thinks is AI-generated or AI-paraphrasedThe share of your text that reads human
How results lookA percentage with highlighted passages; scores from 1% to 19% show only as an asteriskA % human score, with every sentence marked green or red
Shortest text it scores300 words of prose40 words
LanguagesEnglish, Spanish, Japanese and ArabicWorks best on English, and says so when it can't judge a language
Who sees the resultInstructors and admins, and you only if they share itOnly you, and your text isn't stored

The two scales also run in opposite directions. A text that scores 70% human here won't necessarily score 30% AI on Turnitin. They're two separate opinions from two different models.

GPTZero vs Turnitin, Copyleaks vs Turnitin: why scores differ

The same goes for every other detector. GPTZero, for example, has a free plan for individuals as well as plans for schools. Copyleaks sells to schools too: Utah Tech University uses it as a replacement for Turnitin. Each company trains its own model, so one essay can get three different results from three tools.

We haven't tested GPTZero, Copyleaks or Turnitin, and we won't guess how closely any of them agree. For the published evidence on Turnitin's error rates, read is Turnitin's AI detector accurate. For what it checks and which AI models it covers, see does Turnitin detect ChatGPT.

What a free pre-check can and can't tell you

  • It can show which of your sentences read like AI to one detector, point you to stock phrases and flat rhythm worth rewriting, and let you check again after you edit.
  • It can't predict your Turnitin percentage, prove who wrote a text, or replace your school's rules.

A pre-check is for your own writing, or for AI help your course allows. It isn't a way around your school's rules. If you used AI, read your course policy and say how you used it if you're asked to. If your own writing keeps getting flagged, read why human writing gets flagged as AI.

Turnitin alternative FAQ

Not directly. Turnitin sells only to institutions, and its AI writing indicator is visible to instructors and administrators, not students. Your instructor can download the report and share it with you.

Yes. The detector on this page is free: 5 checks a day without an account, 40 to 200 words each. It uses its own model, so it won't show you Turnitin's score.

None can honestly promise to match it. Turnitin uses its own proprietary model and every other detector, ours included, uses a different one, so scores for the same text can differ.

Not necessarily. We report the share of your text that reads human, Turnitin reports the share it thinks is AI, and the two numbers come from different models.

Only if your school licenses Turnitin's AI writing feature and has it switched on. Some universities, such as Vanderbilt and the University of Waterloo, have turned it off.
